LABOUR COUNCIL STRATEGIC PLAN 2012-2015 -
Rising to the challenge. Tackling Inequality. Fighting for Justice
In this second decade of the 21st century, inequality continues to grown in greater Toronto and across Canada. Following the financial crash of 2008, the excesses and instability of unbridled capitalism came under mounting criticism. However, CEO’s and pro-business politicians quickly countered by turning the crisis into an
opportunity to advance their agenda even more aggressively.
The strategy described by Naomi Klein in her book, The Shock Doctrine is being played out around the world – it is a renewed neo-liberal offensive waged under the banner of “austerity”. Government deficts are bveing used as a pretessxt to mount sweeping attacks on working peole. Corporations are behind the push to privatize public services, sell public assets and undrmine democratice public institutions.
Workers who once believed that they had a secure future are either suffering setbacks or see them loomin. Young people are experienceing mounting student debt and shrinking employment opporutniteis. The combined impacts of cuts to public services, unemployment, precarious work and declining rates of u;nionization leave growing sections of the workforce in poverty - expecially in racialized communities.
